WINTER
"The season of cold winds & short days. It has us retreating into the warmth & comfort of our homes & yet, there is exquisite beauty in nature at this time of year. Frosted branches, sparkling waters & the magical stillness of a snowy forest. Winter offers us a beautiful palette of silvers, blues and deep greens which soothe the soul. Long winter shadows stretch across the countryside while skeletal bare branches reach towards the sky. Each snowflake is a little work of art in itself. Blankets of white create a hushed pristine canvas while frost glistens like diamonds in the winter sun."

NEW SERIES - WINTER WATER
My new series of paintings is called Winter Water & consists of 4 paintings all inspired by the rivers & lakes of Switzerland.
For the first painting Apricity, I worked from photos I took from the beautiful town of Lutry on the shores of Lake Geneva. The November sun was casting long shadows across the lake & momentarily warming a cold day.
The second painting is entitled The Colour of Water & is inspired by the seasons colours reflected in the turquoise water of the River Aare in Bern.
Painting Number 3 is called Once Upon a River. I referred to photos of the movement of water when blown by the winter breeze and the ripples on the surface & the golden light which dances across the waves.
The final work is Winter Doesn’t Hurry, which is inspired again by the effect of wind on water but on this occasion the river had taken on a different winter persona in shades of green & blue. Once again I have used gold which made me think of the ancient craft of cloisonné when strips of wire, usually gold, are used to form a pattern & powdered colourful enamel is added to fill the spaces creating beautiful decorative pieces of art.

WHEN NATURE AND JAPAN COLLIDE

I collected & pressed gingko leaves from a tree that grows close to my home. I knew I wanted to use them to form a collage but needed some more inspiration for my work. I began reading about the gingko tree & it's meaning in Asian culture. This led me to articles about beautiful painted fans in Japan which in turn inspired me to create this unique little piece. It contains pressed gingko leaves, varnished to protect them & highlighted in gold. They are mounted on board & framed in a vintage gilt wood frame. The central gingko leaf is hand painted to resemble the decorative sensu fans of Japan.
This piece has already found a new home.
